The Pentax PF-85EDA RA 85 mm Spotting Scope is made in Japan and features ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass optical elements to effectively minimize chromatic aberrations and produce high contrast, sharp, color rich images. This quality spotting scope, which is perfect for bird watching, nature & astronomy observations and more, also features a full multi-coating on all optical elements and a phase-coated roof prism. This model of the PF-85EDA comes with a case as well as caps for both ends, but does not include an eyepiece. However, the eyepiece mount is a standard 1.25" (31.7mm) and can accept a wide range of eyepieces that are designed with the magnification and field of view best suited to your intended applications.
Despite its large 85 mm objective lens, the Pentax PF-85EDA spotting scope is designed to be compact and highly portable. This compact roof prism design makes it easy to be carried to a variety of destinations, and can easily be taken on a plane.
The eyepiece section of the scope is slanted upward at a 45-degree angle, allowing subject observations over long periods of time in a natural, comfortable posture. As mentioned earlier, the PF-85EDA does not come standard with an eyepiece, but you can use good quality 1.25" eyepieces that you may already own. If you would like an easy to use zoom eyepiece, this spotting scope also comes in a kit with an 8-24 zoom eyepiece (#PF-85EDA-KIT), or you can buy single focal length Pentax eyepieces to match your spotter.
It is so nice to know that this Pentax spotting scope itself is waterproof! By inserting a dust-proof glass element in the eyepiece mount, it is designed to be airtight for outstanding waterproof performance (equivalent to JIS Class 7, with water resistance to a depth of one meter, although it CANNOT be used under water) for dependable use even in the rain or mist. Please note that any optional eyepiece you use with the PF-85EDA may or may not be waterproof; you would need to check the specs and buy accordingly if you want a fully waterproof rig.
The interior of this spotting scope is filled with nitrogen gas to prevent fogging caused by sudden temperature changes. This assures a clear field of view even in demanding weather conditions.
Other features of the Pentax PF-85EDA body include a built-in lens hood to shield out excessive light and protect the objective lens surface, a tripod foot, allowing you to attach the scope to any standard camera tripod.
